A pomegranate tree in the Kerameikos, Athens

Our community of students and scholars works together to study the languages, literatures, and cultures of the ancient and medieval worlds, spanning more than two thousand years of history and embracing a geographic range that stretches from Egypt and Syria through the Mediterranean and Europe to the British Isles.  We are interested in the ancient Near East, Greece and Rome, early Christianity, and the relationship of antiquity to the Christian tradition, both East and West.

    • Programs

We offer B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, a graduate Certificate, undergraduate minors, and an intensive online Summer Program for the study of ancient languages at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.

    • Faculty

Catholic University's wide-ranging interest in antiquity and the Middle Ages means that you may study literature, history, archaeology, philosophy, and theology both inside and outside the department.

    • News and Events

Our department hosts a wide variety of lectures, seminars, and social events throughout the year, and our students and faculty present their work both on and off campus.
