The Department of Ancient and Medieval Languages and Cultures is fortunate to be affiliated with three specialized subject libraries that are reserved for the use of its members and of other approved researchers.

  1. The Bernard M. Peebles Greek and Latin Library. With holdings of over 2000 volumes, the Greek and Latin library serves as a research resource for all department members. A student bibliographer and library assistants are appointed annually to help maintain and update the collection. The library receives daily use as both a reference room and a study area; any student who is a member of the department or enrolled in one of our courses may make use of it.
  2. The Philip and Therese Rousseau Early Christian and Medieval Library. The rapidly growing collection of the Rousseau library, which was inaugurated in 2024, provides a hospitable environment for specialized work in the field. Two student bibliographers are appointed to this library every year. It too receives daily use as a research and study space.
  3. The Institute of Christian Oriental Research (ICOR), a research center at Catholic University that is affiliated with the Department of Ancient and Medieval Languages and Cultures, maintains a controlled-access library on the lower level of Catholic University's main Mullen Library. The holdings of ICOR furnish an invaluable resource for sustained professional research in Semitics and affiliated areas. The Curator of the Semitics and ICOR Collections is a Lecturer in the department.

The department is delighted to consider gifts of textual editions, commentaries, or scholarly books for the libraries.  Please contact us to learn more about how to donate.
